Unsupervised teenagers narrate and inhabit this story. The language is what you would expect. Colin and Hassan use “fug” and its derivations throughout the book as a euphemism for the “f word.” Additionally, Hassan refers to his penis as “thunderstick” (see, p. 8 and throughout). The book does not contain many references to drug and alcohol use. In fact, Colin states (p. 13) that he does not drink, do drugs or smoke cigarettes.
