Author: Neal Shusterman
Publisher: 2007, Simon & Schuster
Lexile Measure: HL740L
Classification: Fiction

Summary:
Unwind’s unusual premise makes it hard to summarize in an objective two paragraphs.  In short, Unwind takes place in the United States after a civil war over abortion rights. The two sides ended the war by passing a law stating that abortion is illegal and that mothers can abandon or “stork” their unwanted babies.  Later, parents can decide to “unwind” their children between the ages of thirteen and eighteen as long as all of their parts are harvested and given or sold to others.  Children scheduled for this harvesting are called “unwinds.”

The book discusses the escape of three unwinds and their subsequent journeys as well as those of other escaped unwinds.  Frankly, I think it is hard to improve upon the reviews noted above, particularly those from childrensbooks.com, about.com and enotes.com.

Language:
Unwind contains little profanity. There are a couple of “hells” and maybe a couple more swear words of that ilk, but that is all.

Drug and Alcohol Use:
The book contains little in the way of drug or alcohol use.
There are a couple of instances of drinking and getting drunk (by teens) and one mention of illegal drug use.

Violence and Crime:

Unwind is violent.  The very premise is violent as described above.
  • Specific examples of violence are too numerous to mention but include unwindings and discussions of unwindings, fighting, beatings, strangulation, attempted rape, a deadly traffic accident, suffocation deaths of teens trapped in an airless container, and teen terrorists who turn themselves into living bombs in order to kill and create mayhem.
  • The book also contains a very disturbing scene in which a character is conscious (although not in pain) as he is dismembered and harvested for his parts.

Sexual Content:
This book contains little in the way of sexual conduct.  There are a few kisses, but that is all.
